It’s not uncommon to hear rock climbers complain about the warmer temperatures at the Gunks. Some folks don’t even climb in the Gunks during the summer months.
But I think that’s ridiculous. While I agree that it can be hotter than h-e-double-hockey sticks, it seems silly to me not to enjoy the longer days with some excellent climbing.
Do I think Spring or Fall is a better season? Sure, but the summer should not be neglected.

Current 2024 Cliff Closure
Every year, the Mohonk Preserve closes a section of the cliff to give more space for nesting peregrine falcons. At this point in the season, the 2024 closure has been removed.
A quote from the Mohonk Preserve Website:
We are glad to report that there was a successful peregrine fledgling from the Millbrook nest site. Unfortunately, this year’s peregrine falcon nest at the Trapps did not succeed. Peregrine nests can fail for multiple reasons, including predation, temperature changes and human or animal disturbance, and our Patrol Rangers and Peregrine Watch team are assessing the Trapps eyrie.
The closure is good for a couple of reasons. One is because the Mohonk Preserve better understands the terrain that the peregrine falcons value the most. The falcons deserve a safe place to thrive.
The second reason is because we climbers can spread out more as the cliff reopens. Earlier this season, things felt a bit crowded, especially on weekends. Now, with more of the cliff open, it’s easier to get first dibs on your preferred route choice.
Tips for Summertime Climbing in the Gunks
Get up early and get after it! Or, sleep in and wait until the cliff goes into the shade sometime after 4 pm.
Bring more water than you think. I carry three liters during the summer.
Go swimming at Split Rock after your session.
Keep a cooler in the car with ice and cold beverages to enjoy after climbing.
Too hot for you in the Gunks? Let’s climb in the Adirondacks!
The split rock looks really nice for a swim. I'll catch you there after you climb! Looks like a cool place for a picnic :) I'll drink mate while I watch you guys climb ;)
