Thank you for sharing through my two seasons hanging holiday lights, I have typically shared the same sentiment you mention above. It is a unique, grueling line of work. What got me through the other end of the work day when I was in the industry was seeing the joy on the face of kids as I light up their homes.
Thanks, Ryan! I think part of my "problem" with poetry is that I'm mainly self-taught and haven't spent much time reading, learning from, and latching onto specific poets as I have with authors of other types of writing. So, I've been trying to work backward and actually read poetry before writing more. Do you have recommendations? Sidebar: I've been enjoying the variety of poetry I see on the Poetic Outlaws substack (https://poeticoutlaws.substack.com/).
As a self-centered person, I never appreciated poetry until I tried to write it, which only happened because they made me in school. For old school, I like Donne. Victorian poems are like combination locks with a pretty high likelihood you will find something good in there. Yeats is my fav for the sounds, and I like the global perspective and occult vibes. I just started reading Anne Sexton again, maybe my favorite all around. To feel like an unhinged American Nature Freak, I go to Whitman.
Thanks for reading, Matt. That makes a lot of sense. I would feel psyched! But unfortunately I can count the number of interactions like that on one hand. 😔 I cous have used more customer interactions.
Teddy!

Anywho, glad to see you doing well!
You might be interested in checking out the book The Equilibrium Line by David Wilson. It’s all poems related to climbing. Really remarkably good.
Thanks RJM, awesome rec. I will!
Good to watch you progress Teddy. What poets are you inspired by?
