Indeed, that was fun! I think I will try the long double rope rappel again. If it turns out to be a hassle when pulling (i.e., gets snagged or releases loose rock), then I'll resort to how I normally do it, which is one short rappel and one long.
Oh goodness, we’ve never seen anything like that before either! I haven’t seen abseil rings in a 3 like that before either…There is an area in Arapiles we regularly do this, join 2x60 ropes and even that takes two pitches of abseils!
We were pretty unlucky. And yes, the third ring at this anchor is unique. The rest of the nearby anchors just have two. My thought process when I use this anchor is "if I have a third, why not use it?" But now maybe I have a reason to avoid the third ring (since two is plenty strong enough.)
